Welcome to the Annual ICE Summer Workshop Series 2008!

Why a Summer Workshop Series?

We have listened to our members! Many of you expressed a need for additional professional development opportunities beyond the annual ICE Conference. We are offering hands-on workshops throughout the state that are presented “by members, for members” to help meet this need. Please take a look at this year's excellent workshop offering online or you may download a PDF version of them.

How Do I Register?

To sign up for workshops, please download and complete one of the following registration forms:

What Is the Cost to Participate?

Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDUs)

ICE is an approved professional development provider through the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). We are providing 1 CPDUs per contact hour, as is mandated by ISBE. In order to receive your Evidence of Completion form, you must sign in at the beginning of your workshop, and submit a completed evaluation form (provided by the presenter) at the end of the workshop. Participants who leave sessions early will not be eligible to receive CPDUs.

Lunch and Refreshments

Lunch is not provided during full-day workshops. Please plan on bringing a sack lunch or going out for lunch during the designated lunch hour (full-day workshops only). In addition, most workshops will not have snacks and other refreshments, so plan accordingly.

May I Bring My Own Computer?

Each workshop description indicates whether or not you may bring your own laptop. If you choose to bring your own laptop, you are responsible for installing any required software.

Cancellation Policy

If you need to cancel your registration, you must do so at least 10 days prior to the workshop in order to receive a refund. After that time, no refunds will be given. (In order to keep costs to attendees low, we must adhere strictly to this policy.) Also, please note that workshops may be cancelled due to low enrollment. If a workshop is going to be cancelled, you will be notified at least 1 week in advance.

ICE Members

Illinois Computing Educators (ICE) is a non-profit professional organization for teachers. The mission of ICE is to lead the educational community in enhancing learning through technology. Non-ICE Members are MORE thanks welcome to register for any of our summer workshop workshops; however, please note that there is an additional fee for Non-Members. If you would like to join ICE, you are then entitled to the ICE Member fee for attending the summer workshops. As an ICE member you receive FREE access to many resources such as Atomic Learning and STAR-Online, among others. Senteo Student Response Systems

SMART Senteo Student response systems are a teacher’s newest technology tool. Participants will learn how to set up their systems and create classes. They will also learn how to create their own test. Shortcuts to creating test will be shared. Please be prepared to create assessments using your existing curriculum. Bring assessment files that have been created using Microsoft Word.

Take Drudgery and Plagiarism Out of Research Papers

Disengaged learning, poor reading skills, disorganization, inaccurate documentation--the educational causes of plagiarism--will be explored and the solutions that technology provides will be the focus of this workshop. We will look at available programs to collect data, create bibliographies, detect plagiarism. The focus of the workshop will be PaperToolsPro, research management software to write notes as quotations, summaries, or paraphrases, to identify each note with descriptors and keywords, create bibliographies in 6 styles, append a citation to each note, and organize notes using a search query. By the end of the session, participants will understand the thinking process that PaperToolsPro took them through as they created notes, bibliographies, citations, outlines, and the beginnings of a rough draft of a research paper. Educators interested in this software teach in middle school, high school, college, graduate school, or are professional writers--anyone who needs to write a rigorous research paper with ease, but without plagiarism.

Scratch!

Scratch is a fun, free, easy to use programming tool suitable for students in grades 4 and up. With Scratch, kids can create their own interactive games, stories, simulations, and animation -- or simply enjoy the logical exercise of creating commands and receiving immediate, visual feedback. Workshop participants will program and create with Scratch, explore shared projects on the Scratch web site, and discuss how Scratch can be most effectively used with students.

Give Your Classroom a Voice with Digital Storytelling

We will explore 3 ways to utilize your digital pictures for a new exciting concept called Digital Storytelling! This session will cover using Microsoft Photo Story to bring your digital photos to life. Please bring lots of energy to this one...We will get you started adding some excitement to your pictures and we will have a great afternoon creating! We will also use Voice Thread to connect members of your learning community interactively through your digital pictures. Another topic we will touch upon is the many uses of Flickr.

Digital Portfolios & Web 2.0

Learn how to integrate digital portfolios into existing curriculum. Web 2.0 will be introduced and lesson plans will be shared. (All lesson are aligned with NETS-S and guided by ISTE) Participants will be guided through Web 2.0 tools and the art of creating a portfolio. Lessons were designed for Spanish classes, but will be translated into English. This is for a beginner- or anyone who would like to differentiate classroom instruction via reflection and creative web based assignments that allow students to create intuitive and meaningful products. Return to school with a few new tools!

What Can Google Do For You?

We will sign up for a google e-mail (gmail) account and spend time in Google for Educators using Google Docs and Google Calendar.
